Hell has frozen over! Apple will allow you to repair it yourself!

Reading the Apple press release, I checked whether today isn’t April 1. Unfortunately not. But fortunately, Apple will allow users to repair some devices themselves.

This isn’t a joke. Apple has announced a Self Service Repair that will provide users with an access to original spare parts and replacement instructions. Of course - we will talk about the most frequently and easily replaced elements, such as displays, batteries and cameras. Apple ensures that the range of spare parts will expand over time.

Apple will open a special Apple Self Service Repair Online Store next year, where you can purchase replacement components as well as the tools necessary to get the repair done properly. The company ensures that new devices are already built so that the repair is not too difficult and possible to be carried out by a user with basic knowledge about the construction of electronic devices. Of course, Apple isn’t doing it out of kindness and willingness to relieve its own service technicians, but under pressure from the US Federal Trade Commission. This is the aftermath of the "scandal" related to Face ID, which stopped working after an unauthorized replacement of the display. Now - it works.

The Self Service Repair will initially be available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 series and M1-based Macs, but the range of products is expected to expand over time. The service will initially only be available in the US. Naturally, the manufacturer strongly encourages you to hand over broken equipment into the hands of qualified service technicians. And we are left with fond memories of the times when it was enough to remove a piece of the housing to replace the battery...
