Samsung today presented - in line with tradition - its autumn flagships. Of course, I'm talking about the models from the Galaxy Note series. This time we welcome two - Galaxy Note20 and Galaxy Note20 Ultra.

I admit that Samsung surprised me a bit this year. Usually, in the Note series, we had two closely related models. They differed in memory, size, cameras - but they were quite similar in many respects, including styling. This year is different. We have two very different models, and I can't help but get the impression that the basic Samsung Galaxy Note20 took over the role of the model appearing in previous years with the note Lite. Maybe this makes the model range more transparent...? However, let's leave these deliberations and take a look at new smartphones!

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra is the first smartphone with the new Gorilla Glass Victus (GG 7) display. This display, made in Fluid AMOLED technology, has a diagonal of 6.9 inches and a resolution of 3200x1440 pixels, as well as a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The refresh rate can be adjusted automatically to provide the perfect compromise between smooth images and energy efficiency. There is also support for HDR10 and an integrated fingerprint reader.

The heart of the smartphone is - invariably - the Exynos 990 processor, supported by 12 GB of RAM. UFS 3.1 internal memory comes in 256 and 512 GB variants. Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra - like its smaller brother - received stereo speakers signed by AKG, as well as NFC or DualSIM with support for the eSIM standard. A new feature is a low latency stylus - 9 ms. The power supply is provided by a 4500 mAh battery with 25 W fast charging and 15 W wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra has a 10-megapixel selfie camera, with an f/2.2 aperture. In turn, a triple camera was mounted, with a main matrix of 108 Mpx and aperture f/1.8. The next module is wide-angle, with a 12 Mpx matrix and f/2.2 aperture, and the last one is 12 Mpx with a periscope f/3.0 lens giving 5x lossless zoom, 10x hybrid and 50x digital zoom. There was also filming in 8K and laser autofocus. All of this was closed in an IP68-certified housing with glossy Mystic Black and Mystic White colours and a matte Mystic Bronze. The price for the 256 GB 5G version is €1.299, and for 512 GB €1499.

Samsung Galaxy Note20

Samsung Galaxy Note20 is the smaller from the new models. It has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen (1080x2400 px) with a standard refresh rate and a Gorilla Glass 5 cover. An interesting fact is that this model uses a flat display, without rounding on the sides, and the back of the housing is covered with ... Glasstic material. I have nothing against it, after all, Samsung has already proven that plastic can look really good, and has some advantages over glass. However, the fingerprint reader remained under the display, and the housing - although it has a plastic back - will still boast an IP68 certificate. Another peculiarity of this model is the inability to expand the memory with a microSD card.

The heart of Samsung Galaxy Note20 is the proprietary Exynos 990 processor (or Snapdragon 865 in selected markets), combined with 8+256 GB memory. Of course, the smartphone supports 5G, and its power supply is provided by a battery with a capacity of 4300 mAh - with 25 W fast charging and 15 W wireless charging. The front camera has a resolution of 10 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.2, while the rear is triple. Its main module has 12 megapixels and an f/1.8 aperture, and the wide-angle one - also 12 Mpx, but with f/2.2. They are complemented by a 64-megapixel camera with a telephoto lens, with a 3x hybrid zoom and f/2.0 aperture. The camera allows shooting with 30x digital zoom and filming in 8K.

The S Pen stylus has a higher latency than in the Note20 Ultra - 26 ms - but it is still much lower than in the previous generation (approx. 42 ms). The smartphone is available in three matte colours - Mystic Bronze, Mystic Gray and Mystic Green. The phone is priced at €949 or € 1.023 (5G version).

Some additional information

Both smartphones are equipped with the upgraded S Pen. Not only have their appearance and placement in the device's casing changed, but a few more new features have been added. The number of gestures that can be performed with a stylus in the air to control selected functions of the smartphone has been enriched. Now - apart from controlling the camera - you can, for example, scroll the pages by waving the stylus like a baton. You can of course also add your own options for this feature. In addition - the application using the stylus has been improved. Improved incl. handwritten text input and content conversion into ready-to-send files - be it Word, PDF or PowerPoint. By virtue of cooperation with Microsoft, the smartphone is to support constant synchronization with OneNote and selected games with Xbox Game Pass.

It is worth noting the quick synchronization of the Notes application - it happens instantly, as long as the phone has access to the network. In the "Connect with Windows" function, there is an option to add shortcuts to the phone's content on the computer screen. The wireless DeX mode is also new, although of course it is possible to use it in a traditional way. In the Note20 Ultra model, the UWB (Ultra Wide Band) solution has been introduced, which in the future will allow the phone to work with the Internet of Things - and the smartphone to act as a digital key.

There are also a few novelties in the camera software, such as the possibility of choosing microphones that record sound while recording movies. What's more - you can even connect a Bluetooth microphone! The possibility of recording in the cinema format has also arrived - 8K, 21: 9, 24 fps. A smooth zoom was also added, there was also a recording in 120 fps. Of course, there are even more new functions and additions - but we will tell you more about them in the review of the new Note ... New models will hit stores on August 21, although from today they can be pre-ordered. During its duration, you will be able to choose a gift for the devices. It can be a 3-month subscription to the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with a MOGA XP5-X + controller and a wireless charger - with the purchase of any 5G version of the smartphone. Alternatively, you can choose the Galaxy Buds Live headphones by purchasing the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G model or earlier, the Galaxy Buds +, by purchasing the Galaxy Note20 5G. Gifts can be picked up after registering with the Samsung Members app.
