Mobile games rule - in money, in advertising and in the time spent on using smartphones

According to the AppAnnie report, mobile games dominated smartphone profits. We spend the most on games in app stores, we spend the most time playing games on our smartphone, and most of our advertising revenue is related to games.

In 2019, users spent over $ 86 billion on mobile games - a sector larger than the rest of the gaming industry. Revenue from games accounted for 72% of all expenses in the App Store - this is data from the AppAnnie report for 2019. In iOS, app subscriptions account for 97% of game spending. One-time purchases of applications that unlock the full version of the application are only 3% of purchases on iOS. The increase in subscriptions is fueled by popular applications such as Netflix, Chinese Tencent Video and Tinder. Of the top 250 applications (by expenditure), as much as 94% earn on subscriptions. It is worth adding that the report does not include in-app purchases (micropayments) or subscriptions made after installing the app, outside of the App Store or Google Play (e.g. Spotify).

It is worth noting that developers are looking for alternative ways to generate revenue and avoid payment fees when using stores with iOS and Android applications (App Store charges 30% for in-app payments). Broker fees are avoided even by Amazon, which has always required Kindle users to purchase e-books on its website, while Epic Games removed Fortnite from the Google Play store in 2019 and launched its own application store, which derives 100% of revenues.

According to AppAnnie, users spend 3 hours and 40 minutes daily using phones, an increase of 35% compared to 2016. Details of the analysis can be found in the full text of the AppAnnie report - The State of Mobile 2020.
